LARGE EXPRESSIVE YANGORU WOOD PLANK-LIKE YAM MASK

 

 

Origin: New Guinea, N. of the Middle Sepik River, Foothills of the Prince Alexander Mountains,  Abelam People, West Yangoru Area Wingei Village  (Provenance: Ex. Michael Hamson)

Period/Date:  1940's possibly older

Materials: Hardwood, fiber, natural pigments

Description:  This especially large impressive mask has beautiful symmetry and features a lovely expressive face.  Yam masks seldom come any larger than this.  Its surface is overall dark with an encrusted patina.  The ears and septum are pierced.  It is presented on a custom wood and stainless steel base with etched plaque on the bottom.  Although the presentation is very handsome, Michael has stopped doing this kind of base because it was cost prohibitive at $300 each.
