Period/Date: 19th century

Materials:  hardwood, iron nails, aluminum

Description:  Here's a lovely mortar (mehbash) which was used to crush coffee.  It is vigorously carved with impressive bird and floral motifs.  It has a wonderful jar-like form with great volume and shows extensive use.  In good condition except for several stable age cracks.  Its surface has some applied varnish.
