Description:  This extraordinary mask called a "lewa" is presented on a custom metal stand.  It represents a mythical spirit called a "tangbwal" whose function was to travel around the village regulating the food supply before important feasts.  Usually this type of mask does not appeal to me but this high quality example is special for its overall refinement and gorgeous blue pigments.  It has a distinctive feminine presence and has sensitively formed cupped ears.  It retains its original bite stick which is tightly lashed with rattan.  These masks were important and saved after the ceremonies even though their costumes were destroyed.  This one has been cherished and well carved for evidenced by an old stitched rattan mend to the upper right edge.

Dimensions:   Height 16.25"  (41 cm), Width 7.75"  (19.5 cm)
