DECORATED NEW GUINEA TURTLE SHELL ARMBAND, Ex. Peter Hallinan Collection

 

Origin: New Guinea, North Coast, Coastal Sepik region    (Provenance: Ex. Peter Hallinan Collection, Australia)

Period/Date:  Circa 1940's or earlier

Materials:  Turtle Shell, Fiber, Red Ocher

Dimensions:  Overall Height with Fiber 8.5"  (22 cm),  Width 5.25"  (13.5 cm) 

Description:   This old traditional example is in amazing condition and presented on a custom metal display stand.  It even retains its woven fiber binding with pigtail flap which likely resembles a stylized Crocodile head!  It features two panels of incised decoration which is framed by scalloped motifs on the top and bottom.  It is in near perfect condition with no chips or loss being pretty miraculous.  These cherished armbands were in high demand and were traded far into the interior where they were greatly valued and used for ceremonial payments like bride price.  It has Hallinan's collection numbers on the inside which reads H641A related example can be see on page 75 of "Pacific Jewlery and Adornment" by Roger Neich and Fuli Pereira.
