TIWI CEREMONIAL BARBED SPEAR WITH SNAKE HANDLE

 

Origin: N. Australia, North Coast of Darwin,  Bathurst or Melville Island, Tiwi Culture   

Period/Date:  Early 20th Century

Materials: Wood, Natural Pigments

Description:  This ceremonial barbed spear is decorated with white, yellow and black ocher paint and terminates into an atypical snake head!  The paint is somewhat muted from age and exposure but is still quite vivid.  In good condition with no restoration or broken barbs.

Dimensions:   Height 23.5"  (59.5 cm), Width 2"  (5 cm)
