TEKE PRESTIGE PIPE W/ RELIEF-CARVED FIGURE CLUTCHING THE BOWL

Origin:   Dem. Rep. of Congo, Teke People   (Provenance:  Old French Collection)

Period/Date: Early 20th century

Materials:  Hardwood, tin, tobacco residue

Description:  This classic pipe is presented on a custom metal base.   The figure is completely relief-carved away from the bowl having vast negative space making it especially whimsical and lyrical!  There is a natural age crack running the side of the bowl along the arm to the back of the figure.  There is some old resin suggesting a native mend.  It is a very well used example and has acquired a natural honey color patina.  Closely Related pipes can be seen in Yale Achieve #7895 and 7897.  See also "Kings of African Art" 1992, 41 #17, plate 8.
