Item Code: OC1005-99

Origin:   Island of East Sumba, East of Java  (Provenance: Previously in an old Dutch Collection)

Description:   This gorgeous ceremonial comb is called a "hai kara jangga" and is worn by women of a noble class like a crown (Presented on a custom metal display stand).    This example probably dates to the first quarter of the 20th century and features classic intricate cutwork.  A "skull tree" is in the center of the design with a profusion of animals (Cocks and Horses) framing each side.  A  "skull tree" or "andung" tree was a type of alter for displaying captured heads after war raids on other regions!  Bringing heads back to the village was associated with bringing back prosperity and luck.  It is further adorned with eight bands of finely incised horizontal lines having been carefully in-filled with lime.  In very good condition for its age with some slight loss to three teeth.  On occasion these combs turn up at tribal art fairs and are often priced at $3500 or more
