SUPERB IFUGAO SPOON W/ STANDING FIGURE

 

Origin: Northern Luzon,  Ifugao tribe (Provenance: From a Glen Ridge New Jersey collection, by descent through the family.  Collected by Major General Harry Hill Bandholtz, before 1915)

Period/Date:  Collected before 1915, Likely 19th century

Materials:  Hardwood

Dimensions:  Height 8 1/8"  (20.5 cm),  Width 2.5"  (6.5 cm) 

Description:  This spoon has a classic standing Bulul-like figure with a top knot.  It is and especially great example of its type.  It is near "perfect" in the sense that it has beautiful color, wood grain, deep patina, and is finely carved!   In addition, the spoon is about 15-20 percent larger than most.
