EARLY NEW GUINEA SPEAR THROWER

 

Origin:   New Guinea, East Sepik Province?  (Provenance: Acquired from an Australian Collector)

Period/Date: At least Early 20th century, possibly older

Materials:  Wood, Rattan

Dimensions:  Height 25.5" (65 cm),  Width 3.5"  (9 cm) 

Description:  The tool marks on this early spear thrower suggests it could be shell or stone carved.  It retains its original intact, deeply carved, ornament of a stylized Cockatoo bird.  Its binding is in near perfect condition and it has acquired a magnificent dark varied patina turning to red.  Presented on a custom metal display stand.
