ANTIQUE LOMBOK FIGURATIVE RICE BEATER

Origin:   Indonesia, Island of Lombok  (Provenance: Recently discovered by an antique store owner in Portland Oregon)

Description:  This rare figurative rice beater is presented on a custom metal display stand.  The female standing figure with hands resting at the midsection has  striking similarities to sculpture seen in Polynesian cultures.  The figure is sensitively carved and has a definite spirituality to it.  It is carved from a type of Palm species.  The flat face was used to beat the ends of rice stalks to make them flat after they were gathered in a bundle.  It shows long traditional use and has acquired a mellow varied patina.
