19TH C. PHILIPPINE FOOD SPOON

 

Origin: Northern Luzon,  Ifugao tribe 

Period/Date:  At least Early 20th century, likely 19th century

Materials:  Hardwood

Dimensions:  Height 8"  (20.2 cm),  Width 2.5"  (6.5 cm) 

Description:  This spoon has a nice quality standing Bulul-like figure with a top knot (presented on a custom metal stand).  In the old days especially fine wooden spoons like this were used by the guests of wealthy hosts.  This example has some of the most prominent pierced ears we've seen.   It shows long wear and traditional use having a rich patina turning to red.  In good condition with a couple small chips on the rim.
