GROUP OF LARGE S. PHILIPPINE CARVED COCONUT BOWLS

Origin: Philippines, Possibly Mindanao, Davao Gulf or Sulu Archipelago   (Provenance: Acquired from an old mariner family collection in Nantucket Massachusetts)

Period/Date:  19th- Early 20th Century

Materials:  Coconuts

Dimensions:  Diameter 5.25"-6" (13.5-15.5 cm)

Description:   The impressive incised geometric patterns on these food bowls look at first glance to be Polynesian (Fijian, Tongan or even Marquesas).  However, research and conversations with field collectors point the Philippine Islands as their origin.  Each bowl is distinctive with the center one having the most complex herringbone pattern.  They all have an incised band around top rim which varies in size from one inch to 2.5 inches.  They were difficult to photograph yet look spectacular in person; their textured surfaces being pleasantly tactile.  Custom metal display stands included.
