SUPERB 19TH C. IFUGAO HEARTH FIGURE, PREGNANT FEMALE

Origin: N. Philippine, Luzon, Hapao Area, Ifugao (Provenance: Ex. Collection of Paul Harris, Anchorage Alaska.  Ex. Bruce Frank Primitive Art NY)

Period/Date:  Early to mid 19th Century

Materials: hardwood (likely narra)

Description:  Here's a rare and impressive example of a Bulul house-post that was originally placed aside the hearth of a village hut. The pregnant female figure is beautifully elongated with swollen stomach, and pendular breasts.  Other wonderful features are the unique placement of the hands; each clutching areas of the crotch. The soot-blackened encrusted surface serves to enhance the emotion on her face. This level of deep encrustation, to the point where it is now part of the wood, only happens over generations. Condition is excellent.  Presented on a custom wood base.
