PAPUAN GULF BULLROARER

 

Origin: South Coast New Guinea, Papuan Gulf Region   

Period/Date:  Mid 20th century

Materials:  Wood, Lime 

Description:  Incised decoration with lime infill featuring an ancestor face in the center.  It show obvious wear and use and has a varied reddish-brown patina.  When whirled at high speed the bullroarer made a sound that was believed to be the voice of the spirits.  It shows evident wear and use and has acquired a mellow varied brown patina.
