19TH C. ABORIGINAL VICTORIA PARRYING SHIELD

 

 

Origin: Australia, Central or Western Victoria  (Provenance: Collection of Cheryl Taylor in in Blackrock Victoria.  The shield was given to her grandfather at the turn of the century by local Aborigines.)

Period/Date:  late 19th century

Materials: Hardwood, natural earth pigments

Description:  The face of this parrying is deeply carved with traditional motifs.  Old layered pigments.  Overall dry varied patina.  In excellent condition with a few minor old chips.  Custom bronze base included.

Dimensions:   Length: 31 5/8"  (80.5 cm), Width 3.75"  (9.5 cm)
