NEW CALEDONIAN GREEN STONE CEREMONIAL ADZE/ SCEPTER

Origin:  Melanesia, New Caledonia, Kanak People  (Provenance: Ex. Christies Paris, June 2007 Lot 254)

Period/Date: Likely late 19th Century

Materials: Modeled greenish-brown serpentine, wood, sennit, fiber, trade cloth

Description:  Here’s a classic ceremonial “gi okono” scepter which represented the strength and power of the chief and collective power of the tribe. It is in very good condition with no chips or loss and it appears to retain all of its original binding! It is possible it had shell dangles at one time? This piece was not photographed in the auction catalog and was thus one of the most undervalued items in the sale last year which was overshadowed by Robert Hale's collection of Ula clubs. Its tag is still present (stand not included).
