STONE-CARVED NEW CALEDONIAN DOME-HEADED PHALLIC CLUB IN PRISTINE CONDITION

Origin:  Melanesia, New Caledonia  (Provenance: Acquired from the collection of Andre Scholler Paris France.  Mr. Scholler is an avid collector of ethnographic weapons as well an expert on contemporary paintings.  He is an appraiser and consultant for various auction houses in Europe)

Period/Date: Late 18th-Early 19th century

Materials:  Hardwood, sennit, trade cloth, lime

Description:  This particular club is the FINEST quality example of its type we've ever owned!  It is virtually in pristine condition which is extremely rare since the thin outer rim is usually highly damaged or restored.  This one is neither.  In fact its head has beautiful form and symmetry.  The incised decoration is deeply carved with non-metal tools and retains much of its original lime infill.  Its original handgrip of cloth and fine sennit binding is present and complete as well.  It has some minor hairline age cracks along its shaft and some very old paint speckling around its head.  Presented on a custom bronze display stand.

Dimensions:   Length 31"  (79 cm), Width 5"  (12.5 cm)

Price:  $3800      Currency Conversion   A custom  stand may be ordered for an additional fee
