BOLD GRAPHIC NEW BRITAIN THREE-PLANK DECORATED FIGHTING SHIELD

 

 

Origin: Melanesia, S.W. New Britain, Arawe people  (Provenance:  Acquired from a customers collection of Oceanic Art in Texas)

Period/Date: circa 1920-40

Materials: wood, rattan, lime, ocher, charcoal pigments

Description:  A classic old three-panel carved and painted war shield with rattan binding.  The shield has vigorously carved graphics with layer pigments featuring geometric patters and stylized faces in the top, center, and bottom panels (concentric eyes, rounded dark noses).   It has seen a lot of use yet it retains most of its rattan binding and fiber carry handle.  In good condition with normal and minor areas of loss, chips, dings and scratches.  A superior example to most seen on the market.
