RARE NAGA BEAR FUR SWEAT-WIG

 

Origin: Northeast India, Naga people, Likely Konyak tribe     (Provenance: Ex. Julian Jacobs Collection, England, Author of "The Nagas" Hill People of Northeast India)

Period/Date:  19th-Early 20th Century

Materials:  Bear Fur, Hornbill Feathers, Fiber, Cotton

Dimensions:  Overall Height 14.5" (37 cm),  Width 13"  (33 cm) 

Description:   Here's an extremely rare Bear fur "sweat-wig" which is seldom seen for sale!  It is skillfully handmade and has good symmetry and integrity.  It is important to note that Naga hats of this age and high quality are no longer available on the market today.   In good condition, showing obvious wear and use showing some soiling.  At one time it probably head a third feather in the center.   Although this particular hat is not published, related examples can be seen on pages 222 of "The Nagas" by Julian Jacobs, copyright 1990.
