PAIR OF HIMALAYAN MONPA GOAT FUR DANCE MASKS

 

Origin:   N.E. India, Himalayas, Arunachal Pradesh, Sherdukpa - Monpa People   (Provenance: Acquired from the collection of a university professor in Branford Connecticut.  Collected in the early 1970's)

Period/Date:  Early to mid 20th century

Materials:  Goat skin/fur, felt, string, leather

Dimensions:  Overall Height  22-24" (61 cm),  Width 17-21"  (53.5 cm) 

Description:   Here's an impressive pair of "Ache Lhamo" Opera masks.  The Goat fur mask was donned by a ritual dancer and is held in place by a leather headgear inside.  They are distinguished from each other by the different color eyes and the varying texture of their fur.  Old hand stitched cut felt in red, green and teal blue complete the eyes, nose and mouth.   They show extensive wear and use yet are in good condition condition.
