HIMALAYAN BUDDHIST DANCE MASK

Origin:   N.E. India, Himalayas, Arunachal Pradesh, Sherdukpa - Monpa People   (Provenance: Previously in an old San Francisco Collection )

Period/Date:  At least early 20th century, Possibly 19th century (see the wear and patination on the inside)

Materials:  Goat skin/fur, felt, and human hair

Dimensions:  Overall Height on stand 22" (56 cm),  Width 17"  (43.5 cm)

Description:  This is one of a pair and I'm now selling the second one from my personal collection. Here is a superb and very dramatic "Ache Lhamo" Opera mask (presented on a custom display stand).  The Goat fur mask is donned by a ritual dancer and is held in place by a leather headgear inside.  Old hand stitched cut felt in red, green and teal blue complete the eyes, nose and mouth.  Notice the human hair braids encircling the face and also attached to the back.   Although this mask shows extensive wear and use, it is in excellent condition.
