NEW GUINEA PAPUAN GULF "MARUPAI" CHARM

   

 

Origin:  New Guinea, E. Papuan Gulf, South Coast of New Guinea, Elema People     

Period/Date:  circa 1930's-40's

Materials:   dwarf Coconut, lime and ocher pigments

Description:  This old "Marupai" charm is presented on a custom metal stand and features accents of red ocher pigments making it special.   In good condition with some minor loss to the lower right jaw.   Slender, elegant and finely incised.

The Marupai were carried in small woven bags or hung around the neck.  They were widely used in magic to increase a person's wealth in pigs and to ensure better hunting and offer the wearer protection from sickness and bad magic.
