MARQUESAS ISLAND CONCH SHELL TRUMPET

Origin: Polynesia, Marquesas Islands    (Provenance: Acquired from a French Collector who purchased it from a Hotel Drouot Auction in Paris about 25 years ago)

Period/Date: Early 20th century

Materials:  Shell, Sennit coir

Description:  The conch shell trumpet retains is elaborately wrapped coconut sennit binding in the traditional Marquesas technique.  There is a drilled hole on the one end by the collection numbers (LM464.7) where the sennit is secured and knotted.  Typically the 19th century trumpets in museum collections have slightly finer woven sennit which suggests this one is later but still clearly old.  There is some old loss to the center and is in otherwise fine condition.  Quite a rare piece!
