PAIR OF KUBA PALM WINE CUPS

 

Origin: Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zaire   (Provenance: From an old Belgium collection)

Period/Date:  Early 20th Century-not later than 1920.

Materials:  Hardwood

Description:  Here's a pair of nicely incised Palm Wine cups.  The smaller one has a natural indentation (not a crack) in the side which adds character to its charm and character.  The artist deliberately and carefully carved the pattern into the recessed area.  The large cup has a hairline stable age crack.  Both are in great condition with no mends or restoration.  They have acquired gorgeous rich patinas from long repeated use and have a pleasant sweet aroma to them!
