KORWAR FOOD SPATULA

Origin: North West Irian Jaya,  Cenderawasih Bay (Geelvink Bay), Likely Yapen Island

Period/Date: First Quarter of the 20th century

Materials:  Dense reddish hardwood

Description:  This old sago spatula is surmounted by a quality rendered korwar figure wearing a high headdress.  Careful attention was given to the figure's eyes and nose  which are carved in relief.  It is acquired an excellent dark rich varied patina from long traditional use.  Interestingly, there is a relief-carved serpent or Crocodile on the back of the spine which is an unusual feature.  There is  a small chip to one of its curved flanges.   There is an old linear crack on the flat blade which has been glued and filled (possibly in the village).   See page 351 plates 215 and 217 of "Kunst und Kultur aus der Sudsee" by Sammlung Clausmeyer for related examples.
