SCARCE & FINE KORWAR PARANG HANDLE

 

Origin: Indonesia, Irian Jaya, Cenderawaish Bay    (Provenance: Ex. Joel Cooner Gallery, Dallas Texas)

Period/Date:  At least early 20th Century possibly older

Materials:  Hardwood, Cassowary Bird Feathers, Rattan, Fiber

Dimensions:  Height 10.5"  (26.5 cm),  Width 4"  (10 cm) 

Description:   Here's a very scarce "parang" sword handle of exceptionally high quality (presented on a custom wood/ metal stand).  It is in excellent original condition with the pommel retaining most of its meticulously inset feathers.  The hilt has a pair of transformational ancestor figures (front and back) executed in the traditional curvilinear style.  The prominent face is deeply carved having a wide expressive mouth.  The handgrip is richly patinated and is tanged at the end to receive a metal blade.  There is an old stable crack toward the bottom of the handgrip.
