UNUSUAL ERODED KARKAR ISLAND FIGURE  

 

Origin:   New Guinea, N. Coast Madang Province, Karkar Island  (Provenance: Ex. Loed and Mia Van Bussel, Amsterdam.  Collected by Loed on Karkar Island.  According to Loed: "indeed I collected this piece in Karkar.  It turned out to be the only and last remaining carving on the island accept for food bowls and food preparing implements". sic

Period/Date: 19th-Early 20th century

Materials: wood, traces of lime infill around the mouth and eyes.

Dimensions:  Height 36.5" (92 cm),  Width 5.5"  (14 cm) 

Description:  This mysterious figure was collected by Loed Van Bussel on Karkar Island in the 1970s, however, It may or may not originally be from KarKar.   It is poetically eroded having a strong spiritual presence.  It has a furtive gaze with slightly downward tilting head.  The raised symbol on the chest is a unique and curious feature which is typically seen in the Admiralty Islands to the North.  It shows significant age and has been missing its arms for a very long time.  Presented on a custom metal stand.
