UNIQUE KARAWARI RIVER ONE-LEG FIGURE

Origin: New Guinea, Upper Sepik, Karawari (Korewori) River, Ewa Village, Inyai People?

Period/Date: 1930-40's

Materials: Hardwood

Description:  This completely unique "one-leg" figure shows influence from the neighboring Blackwater Lakes.  It has a powerful arching body with Crocodile-like projections and "caged torso" showing vast negative space!  Note how its zig-zag spine is a snake.  Its face is somewhat expressive with open mouth yet is overall naturalistic in style.  This sculpture was clearly made for ceremonial use and was carved by an inventive artist unafraid of deviating from tradition.  Its surface is dry and varied with old visible adze marks.  Some minor age cracks.  Presented on a custom wood display base.
