19TH C. N. PHILIPPINES KALINGA HEADHUNTER AXE WITH DECORATIVE BRASS HANDLE

Origin:   Philippines, N. Luzon, Kalinga Tribe

Period/Date:  Circa 1880's

Materials:  Wood, Steel, Brass

Dimensions:  Height 23.5"  (60 cm),  Width 14.5"  (37 cm)

Description:   This is one of the most elegant yet menacing of all tribal weapons.  I was fortunate to buy this one recently but examples of this vintage and quality are now very rare!   The decorated handle is all original featuring a profusion of elegant cutwork and embossed sheet brass.  The blade is very sharp and is uncleaned or polished.  It In good condition, however, it is missing its iron end cap on the end of the handle which is common.  Two of the brass strips on the handle appear to be replacements or don't quite match?  It has acquired a warm rich patina on the handle and shows long use.   A custom metal display stand is included.  See photo of the kalinga warrior below carrying a similar axe.

Price:   SOLD
