Origin: New Guinea Southern Highlands    (Provenance: Acquired from a private Santa Barbara, CA collection of Oceanic Art.  Details to be provided to buyer)

Period/Date: First Quarter of the 20th century or older

Materials:  Wood, Stone, cane/ fiber, trade yarn

Description:  This early stone axe has acquired a magnificent patina from generations of use.  Note how the binding on the tapered wooden head is so oxidized it has become almost petrified!  Its wooden shaft was carved with non-metal tools.  The stone blade is in excellent condition with no chips.  It fits snug into the socketed wooden shaft but can be removed for shipping.  There is an old cluster of cotton trade yarn woven into the rattan.  Although insignificant by our standards this would have been a highly prestigious commodity very difficult to obtain within such a remote region.

Price:   $750   (A custom display stand may be ordered for an additional fee) Currency Conversion      FREE SHIPPING With (Buy Now) Feature!
