NEW GUINEA EASTERN HIGHLANDS WAR SHIELD

Origin: New Guinea, Eastern Highlands Province, Enga, (Anga) People     (Provenance: Fresh to the market.  Acquired from an old Los Angeles Collection)

Period/Date:  At least 1940's possibly older

Materials:  Wood/bark, earth pigments, rattan, fiber, pitch/resin

Dimensions:  Height 54.25"  (138 cm),  Width 15.5"  (40 cm)

Description:   This old fighting shield retains most of original ocher pigments with zig-zag pattern.  The shield is extremely impressive for its unique construction having vertical side handle terminating into "Y" shape struts!  The pole-like handle is secured to horizontal planks and tightly stitched with rattan binding.  There was a central plank which is now missing.  Equally amazing as its construction is its significant encrusted thick blackened patina!  In good condition with some missing rattan as might be expected on a piece of this age.  Shields from this region of this vintage are now getting very hard to find.  Sure to be a welcome addition to any collection of tribal weapons or shields.
