SUPERB 1930'S GOGODOLA CARVED BOARD
Origin: New
Guinea, Papuan Gulf, Aramia and Fly River, Gogodola (Gogodara) People Period/Date: Circa 1930's Materials: Wood, Natural pigments (charcoal, lime, yellow and red ocher) Description: This impressive ancestral carved board is much older than it may look. In addition to having stunning zoomorphic graphics and bold pigments it is quite rare to find a piece of this age from an isolated region which didn't product much art. Since most pieces on the market from the Gogodala are later "revival" art forms it make this original work all the more! The old world craftsmanship and the tension the artist achieved in the face of the stylized animal can't be overstated. The terminal end of the board features a traditional bird head. There appears to be an old glued mend on its neck? It has acquired an encrusted patina from age and use especially on the dark relief-carved designs. It appears it has been waxed and or cleaned especially on the boarder and the back side which didn't have pigments.
