RARE INDONESIAN FLORES SHIELD
Item Code: AI7775 Origin: Description: A truly scarce if not unique shield dating to the early 20th century (presented with a custom wall mount display bracket). As far as I know this is the only example known. It is certainly possible, however, that some museum has one stored in their basement hidden from public view? Collector's considering this object should view it as the rare ethnographic specimen that it is. The shield has old insect damage and has suffered about 25 percent loss especially around the perimeter, to the figures' crown, and to the handle. The handle is fully intact but eaten, and thankfully only the figure's crown and one side of the face have loss. Flores receives copious amounts of rainfall and is covered with lush Jungle. Given these moist and humid conditions, it is no wonder why these shields are not documented. There just aren't any around. The shield features a relief carved head as well as four deep relief carved panels rich in iconography. They include two crossed swords, a Bull, a Serpent, and possibly a male ancestor shrine. All the panels are flanked with what appears to be jungle vegetation. Similar carved panels can be seen on "Nage" ceremonial houses. It has numerous layers of old applied yellow, green and reddish brown paint. It has acquired a medium to dark patina from age and use. Sure to be a welcome addition to any collection of Indonesian art or shields. Dimensions: Height 23.75", width 9.25", depth 9" Price: $800 Currency Conversion FREE SHIPPING With (Buy Now) Feature!
