ETHIOPIAN MAGIC SCROLL AND BRACELET ORIGINAL LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY TAG!!!
Origin: Period/Date: Late 19th century Description: This are two humble pieces of ethnographic jewelry, a leather bracelet and a "Kitabe" magic scroll miraculously still have their original exhibition tag (very rare) from the famous LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY!! The writing is legible except for the bottom which says it was lent by "W Woollett". These were obviously part of an exhibition and were numbered accordingly. It was common for the London Missionary Society to display pieces they collected during missionary work, especially "heathen idols" and none Christian items of worship like this scroll. The served as effective recruiting tools for others to join missionary work spreading Christianity and riding the "savage" people of their pagan religions. Although these simple items have little value they have immense historical value and significance which can't be overstated! The scroll contains writing in Ge'ez (an old Ethiopian language rarely used today, except by Ethiopian high priests. In addition to the prayers, religious depictions of saints and angels are frequently found in the scrolls, as well as repetitive geometric designs.
