POWERFUL 19TH C. DAYAK "ASO" COFFIN END

 

 

Origin:  Indonesia, Borneo, Kalimantan, E. Region, Kenyah-Kayan Complex  (Provenance: Ex. Serge Schoffel- Brussels, Ex. Francois Coppens- Waasmunster Belgium. Mr. Coppens is the author of "Borneo, The Dayak in the Francois Coppens collection" (1996) and "Woodcarvers & Headhunters" (2000).  This coffin end was on loan for a museum exhibition.  The name of the museum and more details will be provided to buyer)

Period/Date:  At least 19th century possibly older

Materials:  Ironwood, Shell, Iron Nails

Description:  Here's an impressive and powerful early coffin end with classic "aso" figure carved in three dimensions!  It has some old loss around the bottom legs and feet.  It has a dry cave-patina with areas of white fungi.   It comes with an attached wooden wall mount that the museum had custom made for the piece.
