Origin: Irian Jaya, Baliem Highlands/ Baliem Valley (W. New Guinea), Dani People

Period/Date: Likely circa 1970's

Materials:  Cane, Orchid Vine/Stem Fiber, Bush String, Inner Tree Bark

Description:  This stunning woven armor vest was worn during battles, raids, and warfare to protect vital organs and prevent the penetration of arrows and spears.  It is presented on a custom wood and metal display stand.  The upper part is beautifully worked in the ancient knotting technique of a continuous "figure eight".  The string is twisted as the work progresses and the yellow Orchid vine is wrapped around the core.  This process is extremely labor intensive.  The lower half is made from the inner bark from a tree and is heavy gauge and tightly woven.  There are several bands of light blue which appear to a synthetic material possibly obtained from the wrappings of cigarette packages?   The introduction of this unusual color would have no doubt made the "cuirass" very special to it owner.  It is in excellent condition expect for some minor loss to the upper right edge of the strap.
