EARLY NEW GUINEA COASTAL SEPIK MASK

 

 

 

Origin: New Guinea, East Sepik Province, Coastal Sepik   (Provenance: Ex. Kevin Conru, Brussels.  Found in an old collection in Cawthorne, South Yorkshire England)

Period/Date:  Circa 1900-1920

Materials: Wood, Natural Pigments, Rattan

Description:  This striking old mask is presented on a custom European bronze stand.  It retains 95 percent of its original bold natural pigment paint and has a profound spiritual presence.  There is a remnant piece of rattan still attached from its raffia framework.  It is in excellent condition with some very old "channels" where insects have left their mark on the back.  Its does not appear to be stone carved but nonetheless it is nearly to 100 years old.
