STONE CARVED BOIKEN FOOD PLATE
Origin: New Guinea, Boiken people, Eastern Prince Alexander Mountains (Provenance: From a Private Santa Barbara, CA collection. Details to be provided to buyer. Originally purchased from David Rosenthal San Francisco about 20 years ago.) Period/Date: At least early 20th century, likely older Materials: Hardwood Description: This classic food plate is stone carved and has significant age! It features surrealistic zoomorphic carved figures (one likely a mudfish). The patina is a thick, dark brown turning to red. There are two minor age cracks on the sides which is very common on these plates. There is an original old hand written collection label on the inside which appears to be from 1930 describing the village it is from (see last photo).
