A MASTER-CARVED BEMBE CAT-LIKE COLONIAL FIGURE

Period/Date: circa 1930-40's Materials: two-tone hardwood, seed, natural adhesive Description: This extraordinary transitional carving is executed in astonishing detail and obviously the work of a Master. The artist has reinterpreted traditional styles creating a unique primordial cat-like ancestor figure! The dynamic figure is is leaning forward appearing to be walking while holding two relief-carved secondary ancestor figures (presumably male and female). A hot poker was used to strategically darken and highlight various features. The detail on the face is complex and noteworthy. The negative space between the nose is very distinctive. It has acquired a mellow aged patina which is honest, un-waxed or enhanced. In excellent condition with a minor age crack on the chest. Its base appears to have a filled crack on the rim.
