MAGNIFICENT BANKS ISLAND FIGURATIVE PANEL W/ BLUE PIGMENT

 

Origin:   Melanesia, North East Vanuatu, Banks Islands  (Provenance: Obtained from an old collection.  Additional details to be provided to buyer)

Period/Date:  Early 20th Century

Materials:  Wood, Blue Mineral Pigment

Dimensions:  Height 25 7/8" (65.8 cm),  Width 2.75"  (7 cm) 

Description:  This graphic board is charged with bold blue pigment.  The two abstract figures are carved in high relief.  It was used to signify the current "suque" society grade level of the owner and displayed the motif he was expected to apply as a tattoo.  Its show good age and use with oxidation to the pigment.  Presented on a custom wood and metal display stand.  See plates 42 and 47 of the "Ethnology of Vanuatu" by Dr. Felix Speiser.
