MINIATURE YOMBE FETISH FIGURE, PUBLISHED

Origin: Dem. Rep. of Congo (Zaire), Yombe   (Provenance: Published in "Traditional Art and History of Zaire", 1982 page 94 by Francois Neyt.  Ex. Jack and Constance Wallinga Collection Minneapolis Minnesota)

Period/Date:  19th- Early 20th Century

Materials: Hardwood, brass bell, fiber cord, kaolin, resin, magical substances

Description:  This early style miniature fetish figure still has an intact fetish bundle on the top of the head.  It has a pleasant face and a serene yet confident countenance.  Unlike the face and the feet, the torso is only softly defined with arms resenting on the hips.  Judging from the pattern and patina on the chest, it had a fetish bundle attached at one time.  In good condition having acquired a dry varied semi-encrusted patina.  Attachments and fiber cord are very old and appear to be original.  Quality Congo figures with provenance are selling for huge prices at auction these days.  Sure to be a welcome addition to any art collection.
