ABELAM "BABA" BASKETRY INITIATION MASK W/ CASSOWARY FEATHERS

 

Origin: New Guinea, N. Middle Sepik, Prince Alexander Mountains   (Provenance: Ex. collection of Lloyd Morain, Carmel California)

Period/Date:  Early to Mid 20th century

Materials: Plaited fiber, natural earth pigments, Cassowary feathers

Description:  This classic baba mask has its bundle of Cassowary bird feathers still intact around its radial headdress.  It has acquired a thick encrusted patina with layered pigments and has obviously been used in numerous initiation ceremonies.  It is in good condition with a few broken strands of rattan.
