ASMAT WOODEN REPLACEMENT HEAD

 

Origin: West New Guinea Irian Jaya, Central Asmat, Indonesia   

Period/Date:   1960-1970

Materials:  Wood, Natural Pigments, Cassowary Feathers, Bush String, Seed and Reed

Description:  It was necessary to carve wooden replacements heads like this to continue to help protect the living after an ancestor's skull was lost, damaged or sold.  This head is a nice quality example having raised cheekbones, pierced septum and hollowed defined jaw bow (see last image).  In good condition showing obvious wear and use retaining its original dangle ear ornaments.  Related examples can be seen on page 104 of Asmat, Leben mit den Ahnen.
