ASMAT WOODEN REPLACEMENT HEAD
Origin: Period/Date: 1960-1970 Materials: Wood, Natural Pigments, Cassowary Feathers, Bush String, Seed and Reed Description: It was necessary to carve wooden replacements heads like this to continue to help protect the living after an ancestor's skull was lost, damaged or sold. This head is a nice quality example having raised cheekbones, pierced septum and hollowed defined jaw bow (see last image).
