COLLECTION OF ASMAT BAMBOO WAR TRUMPETS

 

Origin: Irian Jaya, S.W. New Guinea, Indonesia, Asmat People (Provenance: Acquired from an old Santa Barbara CA collection.  Complete details to be provided to buyer.  Originally purchased from a woman in Berkley CA, who made a trip deep into the Brazza River in 1970)

Period/Date:  45 to 85 years old

Materials:  bamboo

Dimensions:    Height 12"- 15.5"  (30.5- 39.5 cm), Width 2.25"- 3.5"  (5.5- 9 cm), 

Description:   Here's a group of carved bamboo horns each featuring different motifs and iconography.  They were used during head hunting raids, for intimating the enemy during warfare and on ceremonial occasions.  They have encrusted blackened smoky patinas from being stored in the rafters for years.  In good condition showing long traditional use.  The largest trumpet has a stable crack.  For related examples see page 98 of "Asmat, Leben Mit den Ahnen"
