ASMAT MALE ANCESTOR FIGURE

 

 

Origin: Irian Jaya, Asmat People   (Provenance: Ex. Lewis Wara Gallery, Seattle)

Period/Date:  Early 20th century

Materials:  Dark Reddish-Brown Hardwood (likely Mangrove), Lime pigment

Description:  This elongated ancestor figure has a haunting presence.  It has an expressive face with exposed teeth having an outstretch tongue.  It was likely used in a funerary ritual.  The figure's hands are touching it phallus.  Its septum is pierced and its has delicate arched paddle-like feet.  It is in excellent condition with no restoration having acquired an all natural dark rich brown patina.  This beautifully fluid sculpture is presented on a custom metal display base.
