SUPERB 19TH CENTURY VICTORIAN SHIELD

 

Origin:  Southern Australia, Gippsland area of Victoria  (Provenance: From an old UK Collection)

Description:  This museum quality leaf shape shield dates to the late 19th century and is one of the best examples of its type.  The traditional incised chevron decoration is of multi-legged animals (likely stylized Iguanas) and is accented with red ochre paint.  Outstanding dark varied patina acquired from age and traditional use.  A related example can be seen on page 53 figure 561 of "Australian Aboriginal Material in Manchester Museum" by Shelagh Lewis and B. Phil.
