1930'S DECORATED LA PEROUSE SHIELD

 

Origin: New South Wales, Australia, Northern shore of Botany Bay (Provenance:  Collected by a Christian Missionary in the 1930's at La Perouse Settlement.  Previously in an old Los Angeles Collection)

Period/Date:  circa 1930's

Materials:  Hardwood

Dimensions:  Length 21"  (53.5 cm),  Width 4 3/8"  (11 cm) 

Description:   This lovely shield features an incised Salamander which bold lines have been enhanced with a hot poker.  Other motifs include animal tracks, and natural vegetation adorning the perimeter.  The surface has been protected with some old original wax or varnish.  In great condition having some slight old loss to one tip.
